Wall and rock paintings have been discovered that indicate even the oldest of societies, in which members could not read, utilized images to distribute information and bring attention to their businesses, services, or selves. These early findings of advertising prove that even before print and television ads were made possible, people have recognized the importance of advertising.
Since those early manifestations of advertisements, advertising as an industry has evolved greatly, first expanding from stand-alone ads, such as billboards, to print mediums, such as newspapers and magazines, then moving to television as companies began creating short clips for their products and services to air during movies and television shoes. The introduction of the internet as a new source for disseminating information was no exception either, as advertising companies and individual businesses saw another opportunity to sell their product and clients to people surfing the internet.
Important Components of Internet Marketing
Today, advertising has taken on a variety of forms and includes many subsets of the main types of advertising – print, T.V., and internet. In particular, internet marketing consists of various methods that are typically used together to generate a successful campaign for a particular individual or business. When it comes to internet marketing, however, there are three main components that typically take precedence in marketing or advertising for a company. These include:
- Social Media – Since the days of MySpace, social media websites have garnered much attention as an important avenue for advertising. Today, however, social media sites play one of the most critical roles in advertising. From Facebook and Twitter to LinkedIn and other sites, social media sites provide the perfect opportunity for businesses to promote themselves online. While this is largely due to the number of people who use these sites on a daily basis, it also is a result of the ability to target an individual’s particular interests through social media.
- Search Engine Optimization – Although perhaps one of the lesser known methods of online marketing, search engine optimization, also known as SEO, should not be underestimated. People have largely moved away from using phone books and other resources to find businesses and services they need. Instead, most people now simply “google” a business or term to find what they are looking for, making SEO an extremely powerful marketing tool. In order to show up at the top of the results and get visitors, as it is shown that the majority of people do not look past the first page or two of search engine results, it’s essential to utilize SEO.
- PPC – Pay per click (PPC) is an advertising method in which an advertiser gets better positioning on a website typically in exchange for paying the website publisher every time the link is clicked by a browser.

This is because, in today’s society, failing to use internet marketing can almost be considered a death sentence for any company that does not rely on getting business through references.
